Alien Reboot: James Cameron Still Wants Neill Blomkamp's Version
Director mysteriously confirms he's "working on a horror."
The Disney Fox deal that seems to be about to come to a head finally might well completely reshape the future of Alien movies. There was supposed to be a follow-up to Alien: Covenant in the works, but Disney's acquisition of the rights to the franchise might well put paid to that.
It's still likely that we'll get movies set in this universe, of course, because Disney aren't buying IPs to tank them needlessly, but it's just as likely that any plans that were already in place will now not move ahead.
Perhaps there is some hope for one that wasn't thought to be moving ahead though? How about Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 project, which was very publicly canned despite the director putting a considerable amount of work into it (as evidenced by the sheer amount of concept art that he's released since it was cancelled).
But one man - one POWERFUL man - who might have designs on that project is James Cameron himself, who is already heading back to an old franchise with Terminator: Dark Fate. With Alita: Battle Angel heading into cinemas, the director has once more been fielding questions on the state of the Alien franchise's future and he was asked by IGN on the red carpet whether he'd spoken to Blomkamp about the cancelled project. His simple response is incredibly loaded:
“We’re working on it.”

Naturally, that has sent fans into a tailspin of excitement at the possibility that it may be revived. And while the waters are even more murky because of the Disney deal, the studio would be silly not to entertain the idea of a sequel that picks up the original timeline in the same way Halloween did and Terminator: Dark Fate will. There's a lot more money there than a reboot straight away, that's for certain.
Meanwhile, Blomkamp is doing some hinting of his own on Twitter...
His biggest fans will no doubt be wishing that this horror and the abandoned Alien project are one and the same.
