The trailer for Apollo 18 has been released and it's clear that this isn't a cheaply made film that will cause a fever pitched 'found footage' horror stir like Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield or The Blair Witch Project did with Joe Public. The talent behind this movie just aren't in the same league. Apollo 18 looks severely amateurish and I don't just mean the quality of the footage as that's the intended point, but I mean in the execution of the scares, the tension-building (or lack of it), the acting and, well, any reason for us to be interested. The movie is from a first time director and it shows. It's a real shame because a reality based horror movie set on the moon is an undeniably good concept, but Apollo 18 just comes off as a bunch of guys trying to remake Alien one weekend, an amateur video you might expect to find on Youtube. And the concept isn't what I thought we were being sold on here. The thrust of the movie seems to be a cliched "paranoid horror in space", but I thought this was a conspiracy movie about a big secret NASA found on the moon in the 70's and have kept hidden for three decades? So they found the face-hugger from Alien? Big deal. Filmed late 2010, The Weinsteins will release the movie in theatres this April. If this catches on then you really can promote any old crap as faux-real and get away with it.
