Avengers: Infinity War - Why Thanos Killed Drax's Family
Perfectly balanced.
As revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy, Drax the Destroyer has a big grudge against Thanos.
When we first meet him, he wants revenge on Ronan the Accuser for murdering his family in front of him - and laughing while doing so - before coming to the realisation that Ronan was acting on the orders of the Mad Titan. Despite that, few other details have been revealed.
It's not directly addressed in Avengers: Infinity War, despite Drax's quest for revenge featuring into the movie, but when he attempts to attack him on Knowhere that is - as Joe Russo reveals in the director's commentary - a reference to his family's death:
"This is a callback to Drax's history with Thanos here... His planet was treated the same way as Gamora's planet. Drax was put on one side, his family was put on the other."
As we saw through the flashbacks, half of Gamora's home planet was wiped out as part of Thanos' mission to balance the universe, and now we know that's why Drax's family was killed too. Not out of revenge or a senseless act of cruelty, but part of a bigger plan.
