Following a smattering of boos at the 8.30am first screening of The Tree of Life in Cannes today, director Terrence Malick decided to skip the press conference and leave his stars, including Brad Pitt, to face the music alone. The movie, which has been in development for years, is in essence about the journey of life and death. Speaking on behalf of Malick in explaining his absence, Sarah Green said that he "is very shy and I would say I believe his work speaks for him.". Brad Pitt also backed-up the directory saying that "an artist should not have to be a salesman". The Tree of Life seems to have split the Cannes press. Despite boos from a number in the audience, glowing reviews have since appeared online. Including 5 stars from The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw who described the movie as "brilliant". Expect a review on Obsessed With Film later this evening. We will also be discussing it as part of our daily podcast.
