Of all the international film festivals put on each year it is Cannes which attracts the most attention in the media. Perhaps it's partly to do with the glamour - the French Riviera setting combined with the numerous red carpet events - which makes the event more photogenic than festivals in Toronto and Berlin. This year WhatCulture.com is sending two journalists to cover the extravaganza, and you will see daily coverage from the festival beginning on Tuesday. The run up to the opening of the festival is as good a time as any to reflect back on previous Palme d'Or winners, offering a timely reminder of just how good films are which pick up the prize, with Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and Roman Polanski's The Pianist among the recipients. If there's one thing you can't accuse the festival of doing, it's pandering to popular appeal over genuinely high quality productions. There are plenty of potentially incredible movies premiering at this year's Cannes Film Festival, all eager to please the carefully selected jury who decide which film deserves the Palme d'Or. Presided over by the Coen brothers, jury members including Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller and Guillermo del Toro will decide which film in competition is the best. Will it be Justin Kurzel's adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, or Paulo Sorrentino's Youth? Or something else entirely? Will the winning movie live up to the same high standards of its predecessors? The following list covers ten of the greatest Palme d'Or winners of all time which should be essential viewing for all fans of top tier international cinema.
