I think we've all been expecting this story to hit for a while now. Chris Nolan is a director who constantly wants to challenge himself and push the boundaries of cinema to find new ways of telling stories. This is the guy who made a backwards movie we shouldn't forget and it's clear the idea of working with IMAX camera's is more appealing to Nolan and his talented DP Wally Pfister than jumping onto the current 3D fad. Nolan & Pfister shot the famous opening sequence of The Dark Knight with IMAX camera's and a few more segments, notably the Batpod/Joker sequence. He would have shot more segements if it wasn't for the sheer weight of the camera, it's bulky nature and how loud and difficult it is to stage scenes. But now Collider have stumbled across what looks to be a legit story that a more lightweight, agile and useable IMAX camera is being developed and Nolan/Pfister are naturally keen to use it for The Dark Knight Rises. Collider's source says;
Im hearing that Nolan will try and shoot The Dark Knight Rises totally in IMAX. Ive heard that IMAX has been quietly developing a smaller, less intrusive camera that will be able to handle dialogue scenes. If the camera is finished in time, expect Nolan to use it,.
And this sure sounds legit. Clearly if there was an IMAX camera out there that was more comfortable to use for the duration of a film he would want to use it. Pfister/Nolan have said as much previously... Speaking with MTV over the summer, Pfister said,
I cant say until I read the script, but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX.
And Nolan's first interview for The Dark Knight Rises brought us this quote;
We want the look and feel of the film to be faithful to what has come before in the first two films. There was a large canvas and operatic sweep to The Dark Knight and we want to make a film that will carry on with that look and feel... Were looking to do something technologically thats never been done before.
A whole movie shot with IMAX camera's would be a new feat. Don't know about you but I'm hoping for a press release soon so we can stop speculating!
