David Ayer Confirms His Suicide Squad Was "Very Different"
So that's it, huh?
Suicide Squad released in cinemas a little over two years ago and, despite the exciting trailers, was another flop for the DCEU. The movie took a bashing from critics, and one of the major issues was the sign of studio interference, with the movie's editing a complete mess.
At the time, director David Ayer toed the party line and insisted that, while there was a lot of deleted footage, it was still his cut. However, responding to a question on Twitter, he's now admitted that his original vision was "very different" to the one that made it to the big screen, and Harley Quinn's arc specifically was "vastly simplified":
While the tweet in question could simply refer to how his film changed over time, it's particularly telling when paired with his follow-up, where he states that directors are simply "figureheads", with little say over the finished movie.
Ayer's recent openness on Twitter about the movie is interesting - he also admits the "damaged" tattoo on Jared Leto's Joker was a step too far - especially as he's still attached to direct Gotham City Sirens, starring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, for Warner Bros, although there's been no word recently on whether or not that's still happening.
