FINALLY, Ben Affleck Confirms The Batman
The worst kept secret in Hollywood is out...
The Batman directed by and starring Ben Affleck was finally announced at the Warner Brothers panel in the hallowed Hall H this morning at San Diego Comic Con. Despite unofficially not being at the event, Affleck was brought out with the other DCEU directors but not much else was said, other than referring to Batman as “The great American drama."
Arguably the worst kept secret in Hollywood, the film has finally been confirmed after suspicions as far back as 2013 when Ben Affleck was cast that he would be tackling his own stand-alone.
Coming hot off his win at the Oscars with Argo, Affleck was the darling of the Warner Brothers family and many were shocked when he was cast as Batman. This was partially as a result of a prior performance as Daredevil but primarily because he’d just made the jump to the big leagues as a director.
After the lukewarm reaction to Batman v Superman it isn’t at all surprising to see Affleck announce the film – after all, Batman was amongst the few elements of BvS to escape relatively unscathed, not to mention the dark knight is now a billion dollar franchise. And the idea of him adding his own spin to a Batman stand-alone is just glorious.
Affleck brings a very grounded and gritty sensibility to his filmmaking, which is perfectly suited to the Dark Knight and the denizens of Gotham City. As a self-confessed Batman junkie - he did have a Batcave built in his old house after all - expectations will be through the roof. Can he help lift a bruised DC Extended Universe off of the ground?
Only time will tell.
The Batman featuring a script by Geoff Johns will be released in the near future.
