Francis Ford Coppola to direct Matt Dillon in Tetro

By Matt Holmes /

Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola is currently in post-production on his first movie in ten years, the pre-WWII drama You Without Youth that stars Tim Roth and Bruno Ganz (who was incredible as Adolf Hitler in Der Untergang). Variety are reporting that he has regained his directing appetite, and he has signed on to helm another film. This time it's the Argentine family drama that he wrote titled Tetro with Matt Dillon set to topline. Dillon previously headlined Rumble Fish and The Outsiders for Copolla in 1983. Plot info from Variety... Story revolves around an artistic immigrant family marred by fierce rivalries, handed down through several generations. The story is said to be reminiscint of the director's own life, with Coppola saying... "Forty years ago, my goal was to focus on original writing for film such as 'The Rain People' and 'The Conversation' and to direct personal films about the passions of contemporary life". You know, I've been very critical of Matt Dillon for a long time but I have to say he impressed the hell out of me in Crash. He actually showed some dramatic depth and his scenes are just about the only ones I can watch and appreciate in what is a very over-rated movie for me. Then what does the guy do? He goes back to his nonsense, lazy and unfunny self in You, Me and Dupree. Fantastic. His next film Youth Without Youth sounds superb though and the word is if they can secure a distributor we should actually be able to see it before the end of the year. source - variety
