Frozen 2 Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

A middling - if gorgeous - sequel.

Frozen 2 is finally now in cinemas worldwide, and no matter what critics think of it, it's sure to dazzle its young core demographic and ignite the box office.

Reviews have skewed broadly positive for the film so far, deeming it a mostly worthy sequel to the hit 2013 Disney animation, even if it doesn't get close to topping or even really matching what came before.

Indeed, Frozen 2 is a totally fine animated sequel, but given the potential for it to expand the lore and deepen the emotional canvas for these characters, it ultimately just feels a bit...standard.

Again, the hardcore crowd will still find plenty here to enjoy, but if you're a more casual fan of the original film, don't expect to be bowled over by a superior, improved sequel.

This is effectively a decently-executed money-spinning follow-up made more for financial concerns than because the filmmakers actually had an interesting story to tell.

As such, despite its technical proficiency, its heart doesn't always feel in the right place, and the result is an end product that resembles an oddly pedestrian, garden variety Disney sequel...
