Guardians Of The Galaxy 3: James Gunn Confirms He's Already Chosen The Music
Also reveals Marvel's cosmic expansion plans are in motion.
The end of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 was hugely promising for fans of the series who specifically enjoy the way James Gunn uses music. By introducing the Zune to Star Lord to replace the finite reach of the Awesome Mix tapes, he basically opened up the possibility of hundreds of songs from any era to accompany the next film's action.
Now, according to the director, all of the songs for Vol. 3 have already been chosen and they’re going to be surprisingly different to the songs in the first two films. He drew the line at revealing the decades we'd hear music from, but he did explain the logic of the first two soundtracks:
"Vol. 1 was a playlist of Meredith Quill’s songs, whereas Vol. 2 contained Yondu’s songs."
Presumably, then, Vol 3 will be Peter's songs.
Gunn was talking in support of the forthcoming release of Vol 2 on blu-ray (which lands on August 8th) and also, intriguingly revealed that he's already in conversation with Kevin Feige on the future of the MCU. "Those scripts are already in the works," he says:
"Kevin and I talk about it all the time; we just had a meeting today. Discussing what is the next iteration of cosmic characters and where are the characters that we’ve already created going to go in the next batch of films."
Interestingly, that would seem to involve the team of Ravagers brought together by Sylvester Stallone at the end of Vol 2 - who are actually the original Guardians Of The Galaxy in the comics. Gunn says he's "definitely interested in the direction that these characters are headed and their roles in the Marvel Universe..." which all but sounds like a confirmation of them getting their own movie.
But don't expect to see any time travelling to match their comic book origin:
"That is not something that we’re dealing with. These are older characters and more criminal than our Guardians. So we’re focusing on that."
Could they represent the MCU's version of the Suicide Squad?
Gunn also suggests that it's unlikely future Guardians movies (or spin-offs) would head back to Earth in a meaningful way:
“I think it’s whatever works best for the story, but so far, Peter Quill has no desire to go back because he associates it with the pain of his mother’s death.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is available on digital HD from 8th August and lands on Blu-ray on 22nd August.
