Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 Was Influenced By The Empire Strikes Back

James Gunn reveals the tricks to making a good sequel...

Over the weekend, MCU director James Gunn was once more offering some more great insight into Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, including some choice revelations on a particular VFX shot that unwittingly caused friction in the effects community.

It seems you can't say anything without people leaping onto it these days.

More interestingly for non-industry fans, Gunn also revealed his reference points for the sequel and the tricks he picked up for making a successful sequel. In terms of the latter element, it sounds like Vol 2 won't simply be a retread of what we've seen already (which is not unexpected).

The one unifying message from those sequels is of escalation and more dramatic stakes. In all three cases, those sequel took what was established in their predecessor and turned up the scale and the narrative darkness. All three also include the removal of key characters - either by death or freezing in Carbonite - which might well be reading too much into it.
