Is Kirk's Dad the Son of Asgard?... Seems so!

By Matt Holmes /

He was Captain of a starship for 12 minutes and saved over 800 hundred lives as George Kirk, a selfless act of self sacrifice that gave the world James Tiberius Kirk and by great Odin's beard, it hasn't gone unnoticed. Odin has claimed the man who played George, the former Home & Away actor Chris Hemsworth, as his son. He will play the mighty Thor. Nikki Finke first broke the story early in the weekend and she has kind of confirmed it today claiming the official "press release is being written right now" for Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Thor at Marvel, to be released May 20, 2011. According to Finke, the 25 year old Australian born actor was brought in for the part early on before an uncited casting director said no to giving him a screen test. His younger brother Liam Hemsworth then DID screen test for the part among a few others as mentioned in my 17.03.09 article but Marvel President Kevin Feige said no on him. So Chris was brought back in, this time he did a screen test and it was said to be spectacular. Branagh was called immediately to come down to the offices and witness the tape last week and was also flawed by his performance. They had finally found their man! It's been quite an amazing week for Chris as on Thursday he also landed Patrick Swayze's part of Jed redone in the remake of Red Dawn at MGM. His performance in the currently filming Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard horror project Cabin in the Woods is said to be so impressive, he won the part as the ringleader of a ragtag group of small-town teenagers battling back against invading Russians, solely on that performance he is currently crafting. For us though, it's a little hard to have an opinion on the guy from the briefest of brief glimpses in Star Trek but I thought he did an excellent job as being one of the catalysts of the movie, and at the end of the day if he didn't work, the film would have a hard time trying to recover. I know he's been getting some stick from some quarters, but I thought he was perfectly fine as Kirk's dad. Was it Thor material, in a world where men like Alexander SkarsgÄrd and Kevin McKidd exist? Well of that we will have to wait and see. Finke claims tomorrow will also bring news of another confirmed casting for the flick; could it be the previously spoken about Josh Hartnett as the villain Loki, or Natalie Portman as Amora the Enchantress?
