An unequovical "yes" has come from Ivan Reitman in response to a direct MTV question as to whether he would be directing Ghostbusters 3. So I guess that's that. Going off recent track record, if it wasn't for the fact he directed Ghostbusters 1 & 2, there ain't no way his work over the last twenty years would have won him the gig (Kindergarten Cop, Junior, Evolution, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) but well, he did produce and direct Ghostbusters, and with the rest of the crew returning, it feels right he should be in charge. We shouldn't forget also that Reitman's direction on the first two movies was fun, creative and rather brilliant and despite not helming a a good movie since the franchise ended in '89 working with the likes of Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd again will revive a creative spark that's been missing within him for way too long. Reitman says the first draft from writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (Year One, HBO'sThe Office) has already been turned in and that they are going over the second draft as we speak, finalising the last touches to the screenplay which Reitman says will film next year, instead of Ramis' earlier comments of a 2010 shoot. Maybe that was a slip of the tongue from Reitman because it's clear Sony are close to getting Ghostbusters 3 into the fast-track stage. Once they get that script down, they just need to cast the picture and with Michael Cera almost a certainty to play Oscar (Weaver's kid) and Dan Ackroyd name-dropping Eliza Dushku and Alyssa Milano as his top targets for the female 'buster role - surely it won't take long for the pieces to fall into place. MTV also asked Reitman whether it was true that Murray would appear as a ghost in the picture, something he refused to confirm or deny which probably means it's true. So there you have it - the reunion of the whole crew - Reitman (director) with the cast of Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson which will either shoot this year or next. Next job is to the find the next gen Ghostbusters for whom the old guard can pass on the torch to.
