James Cameron Sets Tentative Release Date For Avatar 2

If you care.

Collider have managed to have a word with James Cameron about the status of the sequels nobody really asked for - namely, Avatar 2, 3 and 4 - and got a tentative release date in the process. Aiming for Christmas 2017 for the first sequel, Cameron had this to say;
"At least, that€™s what we€™ve announced. But I don€™t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart."
I'm sure many would agree that the real achievement of the first Avatar wasn't just financial but technological. For better or for worse, Cameron brought 3D kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, and now we all have to face hiked-up prices at the multiplex for shoddy post-conversion jobs. Thanks Jim. Whilst the story of Avatar was a little one-note, basic and familiar (FernGully, anyone?), the movie did look breathtaking, and the mo-cap work was on point. In fact, turns out it's that kind of technological work that has put such a delay on the sequels;
"We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It€™s been about a two-year task. all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see... Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we€™re really poised to start..."
At the very least, the sequels will hopefully offer us something we've never seen before; the Avatar series looks set to be Cameron's legacy and he has clearly been pouring his heart and soul into it for the past couple of years. Could be one to watch out for! Avatar 2 will be released sometime around Christmas 2017.
