Joss Whedon no longer making Wonder Woman

By Matt Holmes /

On Thursday, it was announced that Warner Brothers had purchased a brand new WWII period script for Wonder Woman from newcomers Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland. At the time, it was very strange. Joss Whedon, for the last couple of years had been talking about directing his own Wonder Woman script for WB. Well things have become a little clearer today. Whedon has posted a statement on his blog citing that he won't be making a Wonder Woman movie which would indicate that WB have decided to go with the new script as a basis for a movie, with the hunt for a new director under way. Some excerpts from Whedon's statement... "I'm no longer slated to make Wonder Woman....Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work.......Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views". Did Whedon every have an actress cast for Wonder Women? I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don't have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. So what's next for Whedon? "There is that "Goners" movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I've wanted to pursue. I'm as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that's a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible". Not that I cared much for a Wonder Woman movie, it's hard to believe they will find a better guy to bring the female superhero to the big screen. If you are a Wonder Woman fan, then at least you should take some encouragement that the project may now begin to start moving sometime soon and the idea of doing a "period WWII movie" rather than a present day Wonder Woman also makes things very interesting indeed. In fact if I had the choice I think I would rather see Whedon direct his Goners movie over Wonder Woman. In an interview with Suicidegirls.com a while back, this is how he described the project... "It is a fantasy thriller, it is pretty dark and it€™s all me. So people will pretty much know what that means if they look at my body of work. But it€™s a new universe set in the present day with a new concept for me and a new bunch of characters. It€™s been a long time since I got to do that, so that€™s really fun". You all know how much of a Buffy nut I am and this sounds like potentially the best thing he has done since then (didn't care much for his Firefly universe). It would be nice too if one of those "irons in the fire" was something set in the Buffy universe! source - coming soon, whedon's blog
