Lawrence Kasdan writing ROBOTECH

By Matt Holmes /

We are a day slow on this one but nevermind. CHUD yesterday reported the exclusive news that Lawrence Kasdan, the famed writer of two of my favourite geek films of all time Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back - is currently drafting the script for Robotech. The movie adapted from the popular anime series, was picked up by Warner Bros. in October with Tobey Maguire one of the producers with the possible intention of headlining as an actor.

The project was described last year as this...
A sprawling sci-fi epic, €œRobotech€ takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship€™s energy source known as €œprotoculture,€ and the planet€™s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
Ok, so since the original Star Wars and Indy Jones days, Kasdan has suffered a few mis-fires. Dreamcatcher (which was seriously one of my most disappointing movies of 2003) being the most recent but at one time Kasdan was the frikkin' man. And the word is his Clash of the Titans script is solid. Maybe this guy should only work on summer tentpoles? Well ya know Japanese anime is not my thing but with Kasdan on board - let's just say my interest has been peaked more than usual.
