The first plans for the live-action Marvel TV shows to help launch Disney's streaming service have been revealed, and they're as surprising as they are exciting.

While it would've been fair to assume that, much like the Netflix shows, the new series would focus on characters not in the movies, Variety reports that instead they will focus on Loki, Scarlet Witch, and more MCU characters. What's more, Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen are expected to reprise their roles.

Kevin Feige is expected to have a hands-on role in the development of the shows, unlike the Netflix series, and the six-to-eight episode seasons will have movie-level budgets.

It'll be interesting to see how the various limited series shape up: Loki is dead after Infinity War, and expected to stay that way, which would mean his series would have to be a prequel. For Scarlet Witch, however, there's not much of a story to tell before her entrance in the MCU, meaning it's either a concurrent story we haven't seen on screen or, more likely, follows the movie continuity, which would guarantee she both returns and then survives in Avengers 4.

However, while at least two heavyweights are coming to the screen, Variety's report notes that the main Avengers, those who've had their own solo franchises like Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, won't be appearing on the TV shows. That's not really surprising though, and still leaves room for lots of other characters.

There's no word yet on exactly when the streaming service will launch, apart from it being sometime in 2019, but it's aiming to make a big splash: alongside at least two big Marvel series, there's also a live-action Star Wars show - which also has a budget of $100m+ - and a High School Musical series, and a live-action Lady and the Tramp movie.
