McG going 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA!

Disney have wanted a second role of the dice at Jules Verne's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA for quite some time now. Throughout the past five years it's always been something they've been ready to pull the trigger on but kept waiting and holding back as the NATIONAL TREASURE and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series kept making money. Well as both those franchises are currently on sabbatical, Disney think the time is right to go ahead with a new potential tentpole. Variety say they have hired McG (CHARLIE'S ANGLES, TERMINATOR SALVATION) to direct, Sean Bailey (TRON) to produce and Bill Marsilli (DEJA VU) to write a new family adventure based on Verne's classic novel. In 1954, Disney made one of their best live action movies of the 20th century, a movie that was the second highest grossing of that year and won 3 Oscars. It featured great performances from Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Petter Lorre and Paul Lukas in a classic sci-fi/adventure yarn featuring Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. It was directed by the late great Richard Fleischer. Disney hope the remake will go into production sometime this year and is said to be McG's next, even though Warner Bros. are pushing him to direct the second installment of the new TERMINATOR trilogy. How did McG get to be so desirable?
