More monster news (not about CLOVERFIELD, though!)
The image you see above could be some random scribbling on a day dreaming school kid's notepad. Or maybe a quick rendering for a comic book. It could be many things. However you wouldn't immediately think it was concept art for the sequel to one of the best monster movies of recent times. That is, however, exactly what it is. The image comes from Kang Full, the writer who has delivered a script for THE HOST 2. If you haven't seen THE HOST then I strongly urge you to buy it. I am not a fan of the horror genre as a whole; it's stale, uninspired and too reliant on cheap and quick remakes or endless sequels (see SAW). THE HOST is something else entirely. Whether or not this film falls in to the trap of many other horror franchises remains to be seen. Yet with such an inspired movie first time out you'd hope it would be able to recapture some of the magic. SciFi Japan reports the following:- "According to the official press release and reports from various Korean news sites, THE HOST 2 will take place in Cheonggyecheon (or Cheonggye Stream), a creek running through the downtown of Seoul that leads to the Han River. Cheonggyecheon was covered with concrete between the 1950s and 70s to build a road, but restored in 2005. "The story is set in 2003 when the restoration was at an early stage. Principal characters, such as street vendors, demolition contractors, and policemen are involved with the disorder and conflict caused by the restoration one of which is, or course, the monsters from underground. The script, written by well-known comic artist Kang Full (as previously reported in SciFi Japans THE HOST 2 Update), was submitted on December 20, 2007 after six months of writing. The press release confirmed that the sequel is actually a prequel, which will fill in the blanks of the prologue of the first film. I loved the first film because it did what all great horror films do: worked on more than just a visceral, shock levels. On the micro level, at its heart, it was about a fractured family coming together, all pulling for each other in adversity. On the macro it dealt with that age old horror conceit - man meddling with nature and the potential repercussions.
