Movies offer us to the chance to make up our own minds about the themes, messages, morals and subtexts contained within; as a result of being individuals, then, we all read into motion pictures in different ways. You take what you know about life, other movies, and yourself, and this helps you to collate your opinion on a film. Which is basically a fancy way of saying: everybody is different, and - as a result - everybody is entitled to have their own feelings about every film. Which means that there's probably a film about there that most people hate that you love. In fact, there almost certainly is. Which got us thinking: which movie that the majority of people on this planet have derided and expressed their disapproval for do you actually like? We're not talking about those movies which fall into the middling categories where nobody seems to know if it's good or not... we're talking about the motion pictures that most people would never be caught defending, for fear of banishment. And then... what is it about the movie that you like? Are you able to acknowledge that it might be bad, or are you confused why people hate it? Our pick goes to Eli Roth's "torture porn" flick Hostel, which is often lumped in with other, lesser titles in the horror movie subgenre, but is in fact more intelligent than it might appear to be on the surface. That's to say, aside from being a tight, entertaining and unpretentious flick, Hostel also manages to be brilliant, cutting satire which asks us to consider how far we - as a species - will take our obsession with consumerism. As a piece of indie filmmaking, it's near on perfect, and yet it's often all together dismissed. In reality, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.
