Variety have tonight confirmed what was increasingly becoming an expected bit of casting, that Jackie Earle Haley who made a lot of fanboys giddy with his performance as Rorschach in Watchmen has been cast as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake over at Platinum Dunes. Great casting, but my only concern is whether he is lanky enough? He's only 5 foot 5 but the Krueger of my nightmares, so expertly played by Robert Englund was so tall and dangly and had a physicality that made him seem as much, you always thought he could grab you if he wished no matter how far away from you he was. Not that I don't think Earle Haley will totally own this role next year but it's also going to take some smart direction to make him seem the larger than life character Krueger should be. Bloody Disgusting also say Kyle Gallner from the currently in theatres horror film The Haunting in Connecticut will play Quentin, the podcast host who is the updated role that Johnny Depp owned in the original. Music videos director Sam Bayer makes his directorial debut when filming begins in Chicago at the end of the month from a script by Cape Fear'sWesley Strick. Last week Latino Review ran a video script review which outlined the new direction of the franchise. If your not going to bring Englund back, then you gotta say apart from the height thing it's perfect casting. Haley is one creepy motherfu*cker, he really is. Little Children and Watchmen are just about the best auditions for playing Krueger you could get. Let's hope they make a unashamedly and horrifically scary flick and not a tongue-in-cheek adaptation. The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has just about the creepiest concept in the history of the genre, now let's see them really push that to the hilt and we will be scared to sleep again come April 16th, 2010.
