Oscar Nominations 2024: 8 Ups & 9 Downs

Some shocks, some snubs, and some satisfying nods.

It's that time of year once again, where the Academy announces its slate of Oscar nominations and film fans the world over lose their minds over which surprise nominees made the cut and the shoo-ins who were egregiously snubbed.

This year's batch of nominations are nothing if not a rock solid bunch - not particularly adventurous on the whole, but certainly rewarding their fair share of quality movies from the past 12 months.

But there were absolutely contentious nomination and omissions, as there ever are. Dubious contenders slipped into the pack, while passionately campaigned-for prospects were left shut out completely. Such is the way of Oscar.

While the nominations suggest a relatively predictable road to the Oscar ceremony on March 10, in the very least it was great to see so many talented filmmakers, actors, and craftspeople recognised by the Academy for the very first time.

The Academy still needs to learn a few lessons about spreading the wealth and, you know, actually seeking out films without massive marketing budgets, but it was tough to get too mad about this slate of mostly great nominees...
