When the Oscars finally come around, most pundits and viewers already have a general idea of whos going to be heading home with everyones favorite bald statuette. Sure, we all love the glitz, glamor, Hollywood charm, and -most importantly - recognition of outstanding achievements in film. However, most of the winners come as absolutely no surprise. Weve all put money down on legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis to deservedly win his third Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar for Lincoln (this would be a record by the way). Anne Hathaway will also sing her way to Academy Awards glory. Despite this, some potential upsets may be on the cards. There are usually one or maybe two shockers at the award show. Here is a list of 5 potential show-stopping upsets. While I don't believe all 5 will actually happen, dont be surprised if one or two on my list come true...
5. Frankenweenie Beats Wreck It-Ralph For Best Animated Film
While Wreck-It Ralph is the perceived frontrunner, I believe there is a possibility that Tim Burtons animated pic can snag the prize. The fact of the matter is that Tim Burton is one of the most successful film directors working today, but is if often overlooked and underappreciated. This could be due to his dark, whimsical style or more likely the subject matter of his material which brims with fantasy a quality often undervalued. Poor box office doesnt help Frankenweenies cause but a critical consensus along with the notion that Burton is overdue for some awards recognition can push the flick toward Oscar gold. While Tim Burton is well known for his live action work, it is not unusual for the Academy to reward a multifarious filmmaker with a Best Animated Film Oscar. Just look at this categorys winner from last year, when Gore Verbinski (another director known for live action) won the award for Rango.
