The first of the "Big Three" Oscars went to Jennifer Lawrence for her energetic and emotionally piquant performance in the excellent Silver Linings Playbook, after snubs for both Robert DeNiro and Jacki Weaver in the supporting categories. The Hunger Games actress made something of a splash by tripping on her way to collect her award, only to be saved by Hugh Jackman. The award could have gone to either the oldest nominee of the day, in Emmanuelle Riva for Amour or Quvenzhané Wallis for Beasts Of The Southern Wild, but in the end it went to Lawrence for David O'Russell's heavily nominated adaptation. Lawrence's excellent and mature performance was a world away from her role in Hunger Games, and the range she has shown in her relatively short career so far suggests she has a major future ahead of her. If you haven't yet watched it, we strongly recommend you go and watch Silver Linings Playbook - each and every one of its nominations are completely justified.
