Paul Bettany's Spoiler-Filled Discussion On Vision's Civil War "Mistake"
The actor also discusses his character's feelings toward Scarlet Witch.
After first appearing in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Vision went on to team up with Tony Stark/Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, the synthetic being already showing a softer side in his relationship with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, while proving that sometimes emotions are a very bad thing indeed.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Vision actor Paul Bettany discusses the exponential rate of growth for the new addition to the superhero family, as well as his character's connection to Scarlet Witch. Bettany said:
They both have these new burgeoning powers that they dont understand, and they dont know how powerful they are, and that must be kind of scary. And so I think hes worried that theyre both dangerous. So he feels this real connection with her. And shes a bit of a depressive at the moment so hes just trying to cook for her.
It's an interesting development for one of the youngest characters in the MCU, and the dichotomy between Vision's rational and logical side versus his human emotional qualities is one Bettany is keen to explore.
You see him in the first movie, hes born. Hes omnipotent, but hes incredibly naïve. And in this movie hes kind of beginning to take a more paternal role in the superhero family, and hes growing at an exponential rate, and by the end of the movie he has a real emotion and real human reaction and he makes first mistake that hes ever made.
So what is the mistake in question? Distracted by an injured Scarlet Witch during the epic airport fight, Vision takes aim for Falcon but misses, his attack shooting War Machine out of the sky and paralysing him.
What happened there is that his judgment was clouded there by real love and affection. And he responded in a quick and thoughtless way. I really love that the moral compass of the movie is this synthetic person whos trying to figure out what it means to be human. Its a neat idea, you know?
Whether or not his relationship with Scarlet Witch develops from here - or if his mistake will lead him to withdraw back into his rational, emotionless side - remains to be seen as the MCU continues.
