Alcon Entertainment, the producers of the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, always seem to be announcing things a little early. Last time, it was that Denis Villeneuve was 'negotiating' to direct, not that he'd actually signed on. This time, it's that Ryan Gosling is, once again, 'negotiating' to star. They might have waited a moment and let the guy put his name on the papers first, don't you think? The same announcement says that Harrison Ford will be co-starring, though my understanding is that Ford's is a smaller role and we won't be seeing him until later on in the film. Blade Runner 2: The Hunt For Deckard? No information has been given about Gosling's part, though I can tell you that the production is now looking to cast a woman of a similar age in the other lead role. I dare say we'll be getting another press release just before she decides that she really wants to do it, whoever she ends up being. The new film's story, which was conceived by Ridley Scott and Hampton Fancher then turned into a script by Fancher and Michael Green, is being kept tightly under wraps. We do know, however, that it's set a long time after the original film. Ford's ageing might seem to be a clue as to how long, exactly, but we don't know at what rate Rick Deckard actually ages. Scott might have decided this story takes place hundreds of years later for all we know. After Prometheus, I'm done trying to second guess his storytelling instincts. Blade Runner 2, or whatever they actually call it, won't start shooting until the summer of next year. We'll all have copies of Captain America: Civil War on Blu-ray and they'll still be shooting this thing, so let's not get too excited just yet.
