With endless Snow White & Peter Pan stories greenlight left right and center and with directors like Bryan Singer bringing a very different Jack and the Beanstalk next year, why not add a new take on The Little Mermaid to the pile? Variety say Shana Feste (County Strong) is in the early stages of developing Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale (yikes, why not just add the word 'money-grabbing' before twist?) for Sony, based on a recent 'dark' book Carolyn Turgeon that follows;
a princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and sacrificed everything to be with him.
Feste would write and direct and it's from the same Screen Gems producers behind her last film. Pretty standard modern fairytale re-telling stuff really and hardly a film we are dying to see but at least it sounds less offensive than some of the Peter Pan movies in development right now.
