The end of Avengers: Endgame established that Steve Rogers has retired as Captain America and rather romantically passed the mantle (and his shield) on to Sam Wilson, who will now step up from his Falcon persona.

It was fairly roundly assumed that Wilson's Cap would debut in his upcoming Disney+ TV mini-series alongside Sebastian Stan's Bucky, but that almost wasn't the case.

According to Marvel Studios executive Eric Carroll (via ComicBook.com), Wilson was initially lined up to turn up in his new Captain America guise in Spider-Man: Far From Home. In the end, the decision was made to take him out so that the story could focus more on Peter Parker's story and the decision was pushed back to another, later movie:

"We briefly talked about bringing in Falcon as Captain America at the end, like maybe once Peter's arced, and he's sort of like leading the team, like maybe he calls in a favor. But we also thought it was really important to the arc of this movie that there not be other Avengers available to Nick Fury or Peter, so he'd have to step up and do it himself."

That would absolutely have been an interesting choice, since Spider-Man's story in Far From Home focuses on the legacy of a departed superhero after Tony Stark's death and the pressure of someone else stepping into his shoes. To bring in a parallel between the pressure on Spider-Man to be Iron Man's replacement and Sam Wilson as the new Cap would have been good.
