Spider-Man: Far From Home wasn't the first MCU film to broach the concept of a multiverse, but it's definitely been at the forefront when it comes to the broader conversation surrounding Marvel's many realities.

That second trailer promised a storyline filled with alternate Earths, with Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio claiming that he hailed from Earth-833, and that the MCU's main timeline was Earth-616. That should've really been the biggest giveaway that all wasn't as it seems however, with those Earths both boasting a markedly different makeup to what audiences have seen on screen. (For reference, 616 is the main Marvel Comics universe, while 833 featured a world where Captain Britain was also Spider-Man.)

As those who have seen the second Spidey film will attest, the second act reveals that Quentin Beck's entire story was a complete fabrication - a ruse in order to procure Tony Stark's EDITH glasses. The story was cooked up by a disgruntled ex-Stark employee, while Mysterio's powers and enemies were simulated by advanced drone technology.

But what does this mean for the multiverse? Does Beck's betrayal effectively mean it doesn't exist in the MCU? No, says Kevin Feige, who took the time when speaking to Fandango to remind everyone that the multiverse has come up even before the first of Jon Watts' films released.

When asked if Mysterio's lies meant that the MCU will never see a multiverse, the MCU architect replied bluntly. "No, it just means he was full of s**t. I mean, in Doctor Strange, we hear the Ancient One talk about the multiverse, so we’ve already established it as a thing." Tilda Swinton's character actually mentions it explicitly in the 2016 release, while the many alternate timelines conjured by Avengers: Endgame are themselves now different aspects of the multiverse.

So, there you have it. Mysterio's deception doesn't mean that the multiverse doesn't exist in the MCU, and the door is still open for alternate-Earths to feature later down the line.
