Another of David Cronenberg's classic back catalogue is set for the remake treatment according to an article in today's Variety. Spyglass Entertainment have bought the remake rights to THE BROOD, his late 70's feature that probably made his name and was the first of what would become an amazing and interesting number of consecutive films SCANNERS, VIDEODROME, THE DEAD ZONE, THE FLY and DEAD RINGERS. Cory Goodman, the writer of the upcoming horror movie PRIEST is attached for writing duties. THE BROOD, followed an unconventional psychotherapist (Oliver Reed) as he encourages his patients to let out all their negative emotions so there bodies can undergo a psychical change. It's a truly fascinating movie, dealing with Cronenberg's number one subject, the human body and how it relates to our emotions. For my money, Cronenberg was one of the most exciting directors of the 80's, each one of those above completely different to any other, with huge complexities, stunning performances and great social commentary. Sadly, SCANNERS is already up for a remake with SAW II, III and IV helmer Darren Lynn Bousmann, VIDEODROME and the much talked about remake of THE FLY are still yet to get off the ground. THE DEAD ZONE has already been adapted into a T.V. series (which we can forgive since it is a Stephen King novel which Cronenberg adapted in the 70's), so there's only the complex and perfect DEAD RINGERS yet to be eyed up. It's ironic that as Cronenberg is having a revival and a new direction in his own career, his back catalogue is being adapted and remade by others.
