Star Trek 2: Benedict Cumberbatch's Villain Identity Revealed?

Be warned spoilers may follow in this post... For the last few months Benedict 'just call me Sherlock' Cumberbatch has been keeping his cards very close to his chest as to what actor he has portrayed in the already completed filming, J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek sequel. Rumour had it that he would be the next Khan Noonien Singh, a villainous role played by Ricardo Montalban in both the Star Trek 60's tv show and The Wrath of Khan motion picture , but Cumberbatch has refused to confirm such a casting. Well, now it seems that Dr. McCoy and the man who is Judge Joseph Dredd - Karl Urban - has let the cat out of the bag at a recent Dredd press junket in recent comments about the actor's performance.

"He's awesome, he's a great addition and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary"

If you're not too familiar with the name, Mitchell was a fellow crew mate and long time friend of Captain Kirk who was given God-like powers in an early episode of the original series. With unparalleled abilities Mitchell went from mild mannered space cadet to psychotic big bad faster than you could say beam me up. Cumberbatch's potential turn as Mitchell was actually something we mused back in March when the first set images of Zachary Quinto's Spock and Benedict Cumberbatch's villain (who was seemingly wearing a black Star Trek uniform similar to Kirk's in the original film and was dishing out God like pain!) hit the web. The inclusion of the character would be cause for much excitement amongst the Trekkie community, but is it true? Could Urban have been instructed to drop a red herring by the producers and the often mischievous J.J. Abrams to throw us even further of the scent? Until we are given something more definitive this news should probably be taken with a pinch of salt but with Abrams at the helm anything could happen.
