After Star Trek: Nemesis flopped with both critics and moviegoers, the legendary sci-fi property was thought to be dead and gone. After five television series and 10 feature films from 1966-2002, it seemed as if there was nowhere else to boldly go where the franchise hadn't gone before. Of course, that wasn't the case... Director JJ Abrams and his team brought the franchise back with a vengeance in 2009 by rolling the dice and rebooting Star Trek to give the series a fresh start. That film was an overwhelming critical and commercial success; sporting an impressive 95% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and tallying $257.7 million at the domestic box office, the most out of any film in the franchise (even when adjusted for inflation). Abrams returned for the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, and the results were pretty much the same. Critics again praised the film (87% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and it's on track to take in over $100 million at the U.S. box office during its opening weekend. Already making $31.7 million at the international box office, Into Darkness is poised to be one of the biggest hits of the summer, setting the stage for the inevitable Star Trek 3. As the series progresses, here are some of the big questions the filmmakers will have to answer. Let's start with something dealing with the immediate future...
