Star Wars: Daisy Ridley Doesn't Want To Play Rey After Episode IX
So we'll see her in 30 years then...
The world is waiting to see what Rey does in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but Daisy Ridley is already talking about her future beyond not only that movie, but the end of the current run of films.
The sequel trilogy will draw to a close with Episode IX, set to be directed by J.J. Abrams (after Colin Trevorrow left the project) and scheduled for release on December 20, 2019. It'll draw various plot threads to a close, and according to Ridley could well be the last time we see Rey. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the actress responded to a question about reprising her role again with:
"No. For me, I didn't really know what I was signing on to. I hadn't read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, 'Awesome.' Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now."
When further pressed, she reiterated: "No. No, no, no. I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it's three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out."
Ridley does then admit that she would consider doing a sequel 30-years later, like the stars of the original trilogy are doing now, but isn't really thinking that far into the future. Of course, we've heard actors say this sort of thing before, and should the offer come in a few years time - 2027 marks the 50th anniversary, after all - then it might be a different story.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said earlier this month (via The Star Wars Show) that the Story Group were looking at "future stories beyond Episode IX with these new characters: Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8..." so the door is very much open for more Rey, even if Ridley doesn't feel like walking through it right now.
Also in the Rolling Stone piece, Episode IX director Abrams echoed Rey's thoughts, saying he believes the Skywalker saga should end with that movie, "but the future is in flux."
After this trilogy comes to a close there is a chance for a break at least, with further standalone adventures planned - likely including an Obi-Wan spin-off - and Rian Johnson creating a whole new trilogy.
