Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Spin-Off Movie In Development
There's been a great disturbance in the Force.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is Lucasfilm's only hope.
Well, maybe not, but he can certainly help, and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that an Obi-Wan standalone movie is now in-development. Furthermore, there's already a director involved, with Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Crown) in early talks to helm the picture.
The news shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, as an Obi-Wan spin-off has been rumoured ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm and announced they'd be making anthology films. There are no other details on the film yet, with no writer or star attached, and there are other movies also supposedly in development, including a Boba Fett film and one centred around Jabba the Hutt, which could feasibly be made instead.
The Obi-Wan spin-off, though, should have a good chance of making it, since there's such a great fan demand to see that character return. And if it does happen, there's really only one man for the role.
Ewan McGregor's take on the Jedi was one of the best aspects of the prequels, perfectly taking up the mantle of the character first played by Alec Guinness, and the Scot actor has made no secret of his desire to reprise the part should a standalone happen. Lucasfilm aren't confirming any actors yet, but there'll be a fair bit of uproar if it's anyone other than McGregor.
It's similarly unclear what the movie would focus on, but the most likely option - especially if McGregor is to return - is to set it between Episodes III and IV, when the Jedi lived in exile on Tatooine. Beyond that, though, Daldry and whoever comes on to write the movie should have a pretty free reign on where to take things. One thing unlikely to happen, though, is a reunion with Darth Maul - something that had previously been suggested for an Obi-Wan movie - as Star Wars Rebels dealt with their relationship earlier this year.
