Bad news for Godzilla fans: the sequel has officially lost its director.

After making the exceptional Monsters and then proving that he could do it again with a bigger budget and a property that had gone to ruin in Hollywood with Godzilla, Gareth Edwards is now big business. He's currently putting the finishing touches to Rogue One: A Star Wars story which opens in December, and he was initially slated to return to the monster franchise he kick-started.

But now, according to THR, he's left the project entirely.

This might go some way to explaining the release date shunt that saw both Godzilla 2 and Kong v Godzilla moved back by Legendary and Warner Bros. The sequel remains a priority for the company, and perhaps Edwards couldn't commit the time. With Edwards not confirming his reason for leaving, speculation is likely to run rampant, but THR are suggesting it's because the director was feeling pressurised into rushing the sequel.

So who do the studio turn to now? Guillermo Del Toro has previous with monster flicks; and likewise someone like James Gunn would be great or Joon Ho-Bong? Or maybe Troll Hunter's Andre Ovredal? Hell, even JJ Abrams would be a good choice, not that he has any spare time.
