Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Final Trailer Review - 8 Ups & 5 Downs

It's been a long time coming, but Monday Night Football delivered the final trailer for JJ Abrams' hotly anticipated trilogy ender and inevitably, it's caused a tidal wave of reactions across the fanbase. It's not all positive, but the general sense is that it's a strong hype-builder with some noticeable flaws.

Then again, it probably didn't even need to be released at all, given the enthusiasm that the tickets going on sale almost at the same time as the trailer's release was met with. This will be one of the highest grossing movies of all time regardless, so JJ Abrams sort of had a bit of a free swing at this latest marketing step.

Technically speaking, that's a hell of a trailer. Abrams has always known how to cut teasers together and his eye for grabbing attention and pulling emotions out of you is never better than when he's on trailer duty. This one also very much suggests that the final film is going to be absolutely gorgeous, that there will be a crucial eye for spectacle and that it's going to be an emotional journey.

That being said, it's not a flawless teaser and there's a lot more some fans will have wanted from it. So let's get into looking at what worked and what might have been done a little better.

First the positives...

8. Some Actual Star Wars

That's not a dig at anything any recent directors might have allegedly done to "betray" the spirit of Star Wars, I'm literally just talking about the film finally delivering an actual full-scale war in a space setting. It's about damn time.

And by the look of it, it's going to be an incredibly big deal.

The teaser actually seems to promise at least three big set-pieces with everything culminating in what appears to be a pitched battle involving basically every single ship in the known galaxy. Hopefully, that means we're in for an incredibly well-choreographed battle sequence that pushes everything to the limit as a means to really live up to the finale billing.

Obviously that sequence poses some questions - like where the hell all of those rebels mobilised from when everyone else was wiped out - but that's another issue. At least we're getting something on this scale, with balls-to-the-wall ship-on-ship action.
