Suicide Squad Is Up For An Oscar (AND 2 Razzies)

Talk about a perfect allegory for the #warwithcritics

Of course Suicide Squad would be up for both one of the most prestigious awards of the film industry calendar at the same time as being up for two of the most infamous markers of garbage. You absolutely couldn't have written it any better.

As La La Land did exactly as expected and picked up a massive 14 nominations (at least 10 of which it should win), David Ayer's much maligned money maker was a surprising recipient of a Hair and MakeUp Oscar, which is sort of like being up for the egg and spoon race at the Olympics, but you're damn sure they'll be taking it. It's not like it was ever going to be up for Best Editing...

The nomination - which is presumably all about Killer Croc's look, and possibly also The Jokers (but don't tell his naysayers that) - came one day after it also picked up two Razzies nominations for Worst Supporting Actor (Jared Leto) and Worst Screenplay. Absolutely earned nominations.

The film, which wasn't picked up for the shortlist of Worst Films of the year (quite rightly, because it wasn't THAT bad), will now become one of the exalted few who have been up for both awards, following three previous Batman films (Begins, Forever and Returns). At least it's in good company.

This is absolutely the most fitting way for the so-called war between audience and critics to end, and while the Academy's nod is not so much a validation of quality, it will no doubt go some way to appeasing fans who will now be able to shout the "Oscar-Nominated" slogan at any Marvel fanboys who get too lippy.
