That’s Not All Folks: James Cameron talks AVATAR 2, 3 and Novel.

By Guest Writer /

It is the highest grossing movie of all time, pulling in an unprecedented $2.7billion at the box office. Audiences flocked in their droves to the 3D extravaganza of the century-so-far (multiple times, it seems) eager to see if the 2 hour 40 flick was worth the hype. With the figures claiming a resounding "Yee-ha!", the news that director James Cameron is doing the promotional rounds for the re-release of Avatar on the 27th August may have exasperated as much as it has excited. But hold on to thine hats, dear faithful, for it is not merely a re-showing to garner a few extra quids into the Cameron kitty. Fans can expect an extra nine minutes of brand new CGI footage for the pleasure. Speaking to both MTV and MarketSaw, Cameron spoke of his overall plans for an Avatar Trilogy, and of how he has been spending time with some indigenous Amazonian tribes, an experience which has modified his original plans for the final picturescape...

Personally, I liked Avatar, but, then again, I like James Cameron and his movies. I know plenty of people who went to see the movie solely because of the hype and then thought it was nothing special, and it is these ancillary bums on seats that may well stay away for both the re-release and the following chapters. As for a potential Avatar novel, Cameron may tell of his desire to create "a legitimate novel that was inside the characters' heads", but as Russ Fischer from /Film puts it, this smacks of "half ancillary vanity project, and half shrewd marketing prep". This said, the old adage of the "book is better than the film" could well pique the interest of general sci-fi fans rather than just Cameron's die hard following, while the sceptics among you will no doubt be reaching for your face masks and ear plugs. Whichever is true, we can be certain of one thing: we haven't seen the last of those Na'vi from Pandora, nor their Unobtanium. Sorry. I couldn't resist.
