It's genuinely difficult to break new ground with the Batman universe.
Bruce Wayne, the crime-fighting superhero himself, supporting characters like Catwoman, The Penguin and more - everything has been done to death in print, gaming and film over the years. Shows like Gotham have even examined a different side to the Bat's world, but uniqueness is...hard to come by.
That's why director Matt Reeves should be proud of what he's achieved with 2022's The Batman. Hardcore Bat-fans were split when Robert Pattinson was unveiled as the next millionaire playboy with the tortured past, but this reboot does a nifty job of making the 'Caped Crusader' feel like something fresh.
That's a minor miracle, but not everything is perfect.
Stumbles come in the form of undercooked supporting cast members (or one in particular, at least), and there is a danger of The Batman dropping into Spider-Man 3 territory at some points. Maybe that's harsh, but some aspects of the film might be jarring for those going in with balls-to-the-wall action movie expectations.
