The Dark Knight Rises: Anne Hathaway Thought She Would Be Harley Quinn

Anne Hathaway has revealed that she thought director Christopher Nolan had originally asked her to audition for the role of Harley Quinn in The Dark Knight Rises. In a new interview given to Entertainment Weekly for their Summer Movie 2012 Preview issue, the Academy Award nominated actress revealed that although she was a huge fan of Catwoman, she didn't think Christopher Nolan would want to revive the character on screen after the immortal portrayal from Michelle Pfeiffer. Here's what was said in EW;

She convinced herself that Nolan wasnt interested in reinterpreting a character who had already been done well enough and was instead casting a lesser-known villainess from Batmans rogues gallery named Harley Quinn, the Jokers sidekick. Nope. About an hour into the meeting he said, Its Catwoman and I went, Oh, no, I played this wrong, says Hathaway. I didnt think they would revisit that character, because Michelles performance had been so iconic. But Chris just does his own thing.

It is well known that Chris Nolan asked several actresses' to audition for The Dark Knight Rises back in the fall of 2010 and didn't initially tell them what part he was wanting to fill. He just wanted to meet with the actresses and get a feel for what they were like, which probably explains why he never told Hathaway what role he was eyeing her for until an hour into the meeting. Speaking of Harley Quinn however, she would have been just as fitting for that role as she was for Catwoman. The Dark Knight Rises is due July 20th, 2012. source - batman-news.com
