Highlighting the eccentricities and tropes of horror isn't a new cinematic pastime. Everyone from The Wayans to Joss Whedon have had a crack at commenting on the rules and regulations that go into surviving one of these pictures, sometimes to great success (Scream's probably still the sub-genre MVP) and sometimes not (Well, what do you expect after 5 Scary Movies?). A trailer's dropped for the latest film cut in the tradition, entitled The Final Girls. Check it out below. The trailer plays like Scream via Pleasantville, with a bunch of smart-mouthed, modern teens sucked into the world of a cheesy old-school slasher. There they have to survive using established rules of the genre, very much like Scream. It looks pretty manic, and some of the jokes find their mark, but The Final Girls will probably need something else up its sleeve, as the 80s horror thing has kind of been done to death. The cast will probably be a help, combining sitcom veterans like Alia Shawkat and Thomas Middleditch with Vampire Diaries' star Nina Dobrev. At the very least they're a known quantity and should help the film find some sort of viewership. The Final Girls opens in the US on 9th October, and arrives on DVD a few days later on 12th October in the UK.
