After seeing his career revived by some astute decisions (not least taking on John Wick and its sequels), Keanu Reeves is back to the top of his game, and inevitably, he's been asked about the possibility of returning to his most famous role. Well, after Bill & Ted, but he's already making that sequel, anyway.

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Reeves revealed that he is actually open to returning for a fourth Matrix film, though he has caveats. . Firstly, the Wachowskis have to write and direct it (uh-oh) and the story has to be good enough to warrant a sequel....

“The Wachowskis would have to be involved. They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t, people in stories don’t.”

His puppy died in John Wick. Not to rake that mud up again.

Anyway, there have been several rumours in the past of a new sequel - or even a new trilogy - but little of actual substance has ever been released. You'd have to think that the studio would be more intrigued about the possibility now that Reeves is big business again, and it really doesn't matter that Neo died at the end of Matrix Revolutions. It's a sci-fi series - as long as the writing is entertaining, they can change as many rules as they like.

The question now is whether the Wachowskis would be as keen to make another Matrix film: they've not done anything for the big screen since Jupiter Ascending bombed, but they're still very capable film-makers and it would be great to see the lore of Neo and the matrix built on further.
