The Mountain Between Us Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

The Idris Elba and Kate Winslet-starring disaster-romance The Mountain Between Us, adapted from Charles Martin's hit 2011 novel, has begun its international rollout this weekend, and, well, it's a bit of a mixed bag to say the least.
Critics are heavily divided on the much-hyped potential awards player, though it's safe to say that this division pretty much takes it out of the awards running right off the bat. Nobody's winning Oscars for this one (or even Golden Globes, for that matter).
Whether or not the more compelling survival narrative and game performances are enough to compensate for the gooey romance will vary wildly, but it's hard not to see the movie as an overall massively missed opportunity.
On the other hand, if you know what you're getting yourself into, perhaps some slushy romance starring two beautiful people will be just what you're craving. As the saying goes, though, buyer beware...
