The Real Reason Drax Thinks He's Invisible In Avengers: Infinity War
It's all Groot's fault.
James Gunn's two Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been defined by their extremely silly brand of humour, but more often than not there's often a deeper meaning to each of the seemingly throwaway jokes. We've covered before how the criminal records of each team member are printed on their prison uniforms, but now a theory on Reddit seems to have broken down why Drax assumes that standing still makes him invisible.
Though the scene itself actually turns up in Avengers: Infinity War, with Drax eavesdropping on a private conversation between Gamora and Star Lord, the gag builds on scenes from both the first and second Guardians flicks, with Drax not noticing Baby Groot when he's not moving.
The first comes in the post-credits stinger for the original movie, with the now-iconic scene of James Gunn's mo-capped dancing, however it returns again in the opening of the second film, when Groot stops dead when Drax is staring at him. The idea is that the latter actually learned from the former that "invisibility" merely means not moving.
Another theory, however, posits that the vision of Drax's race only picks up shapes when they're moving, meaning that, to him, literally anyone standing still would be invisible. That's the exact kind of detail Gunn would subtly pack into this movie for fans to put together themselves, but with the way things are at the moment, we probably won't get a confirmation from the director any time soon.
