Venom: 9 Most Hilariously Awful Moments
A turd indeed.
Venom finally hits cinemas worldwide this week, and the early reviews so far haven't been kind at all.
Though it's not an unmitigated dumpster fire by any means - Tom Hardy's eccentric performance is entertaining one way or another, some of the more groan-worthy trailer dialogue has been cut and there are some OK action beats - it is an undeniable disappointment given the potential of a Hardy-led Venom origin story.
Much like Shane Black's recent dud The Predator, few will be left complaining that Venom is a bland, mundane bore, at the very least. Director Ruben Fleischer makes a ton of highly questionable choices, to say nothing of the script, the ensemble cast or the production values, which frequently result in a treasure trove of unintentional comedy.
Though the film is certainly intermittently funny on purpose, there are many, many tonally off-kilter and sloppy moments that might have you wondering if somebody slipped something in your drink before the movie started.
While tough to recommend as a legitimately well-crafted superhero film, if you're in the market for a gonzo laugh riot, there are some demented thrills to be had for sure...
