Why There Won't Be Any More Star Wars Spin-Offs (& Why That's A Good Thing)
These aren't the Star Wars movies you're looking for.
Solo: A Star Wars Story's poor box-office performance hasn't just ruined potential plans for a sequel, but also halted the anthology movies entirely.
The movie has so far grossed just $343m worldwide, despite a budget of well over $200m, and now Lucasfilm have decided to scrap spin-offs for the time being, as per Collider's report.
The outlet's sources note that while the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie was in active development, and James Mangold had been tapped to write and direct a Boba Fett film, Disney and Lucasfilm are now focusing on the upcoming Episode IX and what the next trilogy will be after that.
Star Wars News Net, who back up the report, have added that they've heard Lucasfilm will be focusing on "one project at a time per-medium", which right now means Episode IX, animated series Star Wars Resistance, and Jon Favreau's live-action TV show.
Other announced projects, namely Rian Johnson's trilogy and the series from Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, are still going ahead, but this news means that there'll be no films around the likes of Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, or Lando for some time, if ever. And that's not a bad thing.
