Deadline reports that Zack Snyder has a 'heightened interest' in casting Kevin Costner for an unspecified but 'key role' in the June shooting Warner Bros reboot of the Superman franchise. Only two roles come to mind as an obvious fit - Jonathan Kent (Superman's adopted father) and Perry White (the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet) - but surely Costner, who has played a wealth of blue collar roles this past decade, most recently in Ben Affleck's The Company Men, is a fit for the good but medically weak hearted father? And as Clark Kent is likely to spend the majority of his time in Smallville with perhaps the Planet barely even featured (there's talk of no Lois Lane) - then an increase screentime for Pa Kent in a 'key role' seems to fit. Costner, the biggest film star of the early 90's, suffered a career nosedive after a string of flops towards the end of the 20th century and has barely been seen in a high profile film since. He is well overdue a screen comeback, the kind Tarantino usually gives out and for me, he's better at playing good guys than bad - so baring Kurt Russell, I can barely think of anyone else more suited to the Pa Kent role. Let's hope this becomes official casting soon.
