Death happens to the best of us, and in the case of video games to the best of our favorite characters.

It's not uncommon for an important and/or beloved video game character to die. It can be a truly disheartening moment, but at least you can ease your pain by knowing their death serves a purpose in the overall story.

Unless they die too quickly.

Unfortunately, some truly amazing video game characters are taken from us before the full potential of their greatness is revealed. You only get enough time to fall in love with them and think of all the awesome things they might be up to in the future, before some unfortunate accident or other takes them out of the game forever.

These kinds of deaths feel like a waste of potential that could've made the story a lot more interesting, but it was cut too short.

Whether it's a charismatic villain who doesn't get their time to shine, a hidden talent that stays hidden forever, or a beloved companion you just wish you had more screen time with, the following characters have met their demise far too quickly.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW.

10. Carley - The Walking Dead

Carley from the Telltale's first Walking Dead season is remembered for two things: being one of two survivors that Lee can get killed early in the story, and being one of the two survivors that can get unexpectedly killed by Lilly two acts later.

The fact of the matter is that Carley is at best an episodic character that's bound to die for nothing but cheap shock value. And this is a great lost opportunity on Telltale's part, as Carley's potential exceeds far between being a bullet sponge.

As you get to learn from her brief interactions with Lee, Carley used to be a news reporter before the zombie outbreak, and because of this she knows Lee murdered his wife and her lover.

Her knowledge of Lee's past, combined with her assertive personality, would've worked great for the group dynamic in later episodes, as she could use Lee's secret to blackmail him or turn everyone against him. This would've been even more interesting if Telltale took her teased romance with Lee into consideration and developed it in later episodes.

Instead, Carley is used as nothing more than a prop to make people gasp at her disappointing death.
