10 Depressing Video Game Trends We're Probably Stuck With Forever

By Thomas James Hunt /

You would be forgiven for thinking the games industry is driven by new and innovative ideas rather than re-hashing and recycling some poor sods work until it has been ground down into a fine snortable powder. The term €˜trend€™ means a fad or venomous craze that is incredibly prevalent to the general consumer and is normally pulling at the strings of an €˜original€™ idea. The term €˜original€™ means something that has never been touched by EA. There are a few points on this list I'm especially disappointed with because before they were squeezed into every genre like a sausage casserole through the eye of a needle, they actually impressed me. So here are my ten depressing video game trends that no matter how hard we ignore them, will survive like a Rustlers€™ Burger after a nuclear blast.

10. DLC

Like most things I hate a lot of people like it, but no matter how much of a DLC hard on you have, everyone at some time or another has said: €œWhat, they€™re releasing that as DLC?!€ Whether we like it or not, publishers have created the fantastic idea of withholding content for the soul reason of charging that little extra to their ostensible fans. Unfortunately, this idea has proven extremely profitable like Kit Kat, and now in this digital age, it seems like DLC isn€™t going anywhere. Maybe the answer isn't to do away with DLC €“ like some other points on my list €“ but rather to re-imagine and adjust the trend and turn it into something that doesn't feel like us as gamers, are getting screwed by these immense multi-million pound companies.
